The founding of organized artillery in the Hawaiian Islands.
In 1854, King Kamehameha III reorganized the Hawaiian Militia, establishing a formal Artillery Detachment — the first organized artillery force in the Hawaiian Islands. This act marked the beginning of a military tradition that would span more than 170 years, evolving from a royal defense force into one of the Army National Guard's most distinguished field artillery battalions.
The Hawaiian Kingdom's decision to formalize artillery capability reflected both the strategic importance of the islands and the growing complexity of Pacific geopolitics in the mid-19th century. The Artillery Detachment was tasked with harbor and coastal defense — missions that would define Hawaiian artillery service for generations.
