World War II: Coastal Defense of Hawai'i
Defending the islands after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
When Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, unit predecessors of the 1-487th FA were among the first to respond. In the days and years that followed, the unit provided crucial coastal artillery defense of the Hawaiian Islands — standing watch against the threat of a Japanese invasion that never came, but for which they remained vigilant throughout the Pacific War.
Mission
Coastal artillery defense of Oʻahu and the Hawaiian Islands, manning shore batteries to protect against naval bombardment and amphibious assault throughout the Central Pacific campaign.
Recognition
The battalion earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service in the Central Pacific campaign — one of the unit's most prestigious honors.
